Training Seminar on Legal and Institutional Aspects of Water Governance 6-9 July 2015

invitationFrom 6-9 July 2015, UNESCO,  the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan organized a training seminar on “Legal and Institutional Aspects of Water Governance: from the International to the Domestic Perspective” with the support of the Swiss Confederation.


The objective of the training was to introduce practical advances of the integrated water resources management in light of the institutional and legal best practices. Internationally renowned experts on Water and Environment Law: Prof. Aaron Wolf, Oregon State University, USA; Prof. Gabriel Eckstein, Texas A&M University, USA; Mr. Stefano Burchi, President of the International Association for the Water Law, Italy; and Prof. Zaki Shubber, UNESCO-IHE, Netherlands, contributed to the seminar as well as Suren Gevinian from UNESCO-IHP.

The participants represented a wide variety of national institutions in Uzbekistan, including the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources; Ministry of Foreign Affairs; State Committee of Geology and Mineral Recourses; State Committee on Nature Protection; National University of Uzbekistan; Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Melioration; and Scientific Information Centre of the Interstate Commission on Water Coordination.
The capacities and knowledge base of stakeholders, decision-makers and law practitioners were strengthened, and their understanding of new approaches with respect to domestic legal and institutional frameworks improved.  The inter-active seminar also focused on building the essential skills for negotiation and diplomacy.
